Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Grant (SURF)

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF) at Berry College work closely with their faculty mentor as they conduct high-quality research in their field of interest. This five- to ten-week program provides students with an opportunity to immerse themselves in their desired area of research while getting paid through the LifeWorks program.

Eligibility Criteria

Faculty initiated. Faculty should submit their application electronically to the Chair of their department. The Chair will submit it to the Dean of their school and the Dean’s Office will email the completed application to undergraduateresearch@berry.edu. Once a faculty member is approved, the student application and instructions for submission will be emailed to the faculty mentor to distribute to their students.

Special Requirements

Students will be compensated either through the LifeWorks Program (on-campus option) or via a stipend (virtual option). Students working on campus 30 hours per week or more may also qualify for free on-campus housing during the summer of the project if they meet the LifeWorks requirements. For faculty to receive the award, they must agree to supervise their student for at least 20% of the hours that the student works (either in person for on-campus students or video conferences for virtual students), provide feedback to the OUR, and mentor the student in the dissemination of their work. Faculty stipend information is located on the Provost's page in Viking Web.
