Berry College Communication Professor Brian Carroll recently received the Robert Peterson Recognition Award for his book “The Black Press and Black Baseball, 1915-1955: A Devil’s Bargain.”
The Society of American Baseball Research presents the award for bodies of work that increase public awareness of Negro League baseball. This is Carroll’s second Peterson Award and he was honored at the 19th Annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference. In June, the book was also named a finalist for Georgia Writers Book of the Year.
“A Devil’s Bargain” chronicles the dilemma, or devil’s bargain, that faced the black press in building up black baseball, battling for the sport’s integration and, as a result of that largely successful campaign, ultimately encouraging and even ensuring the demise of those same black leagues.
Carroll is the Communication Department Chair at Berry. For more information about the program, including the sports communication concentration, go to http://berry.edu/academics/majors/sportscommunication/.
