Berry College sophomore and Synovus Scholar Maddie Bess will speak about hydraulic fracturing in northwest Georgia Sept. 14 through Oct. 9.
Bess’ talk, “Introduction to fracking and implications for Northwest Georgia to 7 different area communities,” will detail how hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as fracking, is the process of extracting natural gas from sub-surface shale deposits. Bess said that the presentation is “purely academic to provide land owners with information to make informed decisions and to raise awareness about the issue in surrounding communities using peer-reviewed scientific data.”
“Some people strongly support fracking while others do not--I hope to present clear information on the true costs and benefits of natural gas fracking, in small communities and the U.S. at large,” Bess has said.

The Synovus Sophomore Scholars Program awards $2,000 to students who are rising sophomores and $500 for faculty or staff mentors to support projects related to the student's exploration of academic, research or growth experiences such as research, internships, entrepreneurial service or work projects or artistic endeavors.
