Berry College’s student-run multimedia website, Viking Fusion, and campus newspaper, The Campus Carrier, were recognized in multiple categories by the Society of Professional Journalists in its Region 3 Mark of Excellence Awards.
The awards recognize the best of collegiate journalism from a calendar year.
The Campus Carrier and Viking Fusion received the following recognitions:
• Viking Fusion, winner, Best Independent Online Student Publication
• Students Haiden Widener and Allie Pritchett, winners, “Four years in: Reflections on Berry football,” Online Sports Reporting
• “Spaces of Vienna” Team, Finalist, Best Use of Multimedia
• Students Candler Lowe, Rachel Yeates and Lesli Marchese, Finalists, “Students and community protest rallies,” General News Reporting
• Students Avery Boulware and Siobhan Mulligan, Finalists, “Chalking at Berry,” General News Reporting
• Campus Carrier and Viking Fusion News Teams, Finalists, “Neo-Nazi Rally in Rome,” Online News Reporting
This is the third consecutive year that the Viking Fusion website was recognized in the Best Independent Online Student Publication category, being named a finalist the previous two years. The website, along with Widener’s and Pritchett’s “Four years in: Reflections on Berry football,” will compete in the National Mark of Excellence Awards.
The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior. Region 3 includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina schools. National winners will be contacted in the late spring and recognized at the Excellence in Journalism conference in Anaheim, Calif.
