Two Berry College student-made films have been chosen for the Rome International Film Festival in November.
“Rise ‘N Shine: CSA Story” was written and directed by Emmie Cornell of Chattanooga, Tenn., Russell Maddrey of Aiken, S.C., Maggie Midkiff of Macon, Ga. and Jake Hager of Leesburg, Ga. The film provides a unique insight into the entire production and distribution process of one the largest Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms in Georgia, the certified organic Rise ‘N Shine Farm. The ethnographic documentary showcases planting, harvesting, packaging and loading of vegetables at the farm, then follows the produce boxes to the community pickup site and on to join a CSA family as they convert their Rise 'N Shine bounty into meals in their kitchen.

“Backyard Chickens,” was written and directed by Miller Hollstein of Duluth, Ga., Matt Bentley of Salem, Va. and Joe Torkelson of Satellite Beach, Fla. The film introduces the viewer to backyard chicken owners and local residents who were forced to get rid of their backyard flocks. It explores the implications of the chicken ban legislations and re-frames the issue as it relates to food security and sustainability.

The films emerged from an anthropology and environmental studies course, “Seeing Subsistence”, taught by Berry College Associate Professor of Anthropology and Environmental Studies Brain Campbell. The students learned how to film, write and direct their own documentary shorts under Campbell’s guidance.
