The internationally-known Stepháne Wrembel Band, which combines blues, rock and flamenco, will open the Berry College 2017-18 concert season at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14 in the Ford Auditorium.
Wrembel, a French-born composer, learned his craft traveling through Gypsy campsites. He spent 10 years of his life learning, playing, and expanding on the musical tradition of Django Reinhardt and the Gypsies
His education continued at the Berklee School of Music where after studying contemporary jazz and world music he graduated summa cum-laude. Since then, Wrembel scored the theme to the 2012 Academy Award winning film, “Midnight in Paris” and performed live during that year’s Oscars telecast. Rolling Stone magazine has called him a “revelation.”
"Music, for the Gypsies, is a question of life and death,"" he told NPR's David Greene in an interview. ""It's a way to communicate with the world. It's a way to be one with the universe. It's not like I sit and I have fun or I have no fun; there's no concept like that. Music is vital. It's like eating."
The Brooklyn-based guitarist will be performing his unique, contemporary music alongside Thor Robert Jensen on guitar, Ari Folman-Cohen on bass and Nick Anderson on drums.
