Three Berry College students are headed to the Southern Literary Festival for their award-winning creative writing.
Siobhan Mulligan, of Suwanee, Ga., Jared Crain, of Maryville, Tenn., and Jack Padgett, of Owensboro, Ky., will represent Berry at the festival April 4-7, at the University of Tennessee at Martin.
Mulligan, a creative writing major, won first place in the poetry category for her piece “Sculpting,” which was inspired by her time spent studying in Pietà, Italy and an Allen Ginsberg poem. Crain, an environmental science major, won first place in the fiction category for his piece “The Oasis.” His inspiration came from his behavioral ecology and biogeography courses. Padgett, a creative writing major and theatre minor, won second place for his one-act play “A Matter of Life and Death,” which follows two deceased roommates who are bound to the room where they killed each other.
The Southern Literary Festival is an organization of Southern colleges and schools that promotes southern literature. This is Berry’s second year participating in the festival and the first time as an official member. The festival consists of workshops, readings and master classes in various genres, and is hosted by a different school each year. All three students will present their award winning writings at this year’s festival in Tennessee.
