Berry's student-run multimedia website and campus newspaper were recently recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists in the Region 3 Mark of Excellence Awards.
The Campus Carrier and Viking Fusion staff received the following recognitions:
- Haiden Widener, winner, “Rampersad's journey to Berry,” Sports Writing
- Allie Pritchett, Bruno Rosa and Chris Ferguson, winner, Vikings football playoffs, Online Sports Reporting
- Christopher Ferguson, finalist, “Women’s lacrosse excited for rule change,” Sports Writing
- Campus Carrier and Viking Fusion News Team, finalist, “First Amendment flaws in Viking code; Changes needed in chalk policy draft; Use your voice for good,” Editorial Writing
- Valerie DeWandel, finalist, “Women’s tennis,” Sports Photography
- Bailey Albertson, finalist, “Women’s softball,” Sports Photography
- Viking Fusion, finalist, Best Independent Online Student Publication
This is the fourth consecutive year that the Viking Fusion website was recognized in the Best Independent Online Student Publication category. This is also the second time Pritchett and Widener have been recognized in the region; last year they won the region in the Online Sports Reporting category. Widener and the student team of Pritchett, Rosa and Ferguson will compete in the National Mark of Excellence Awards.
The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior. Region 3 includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina schools.
