Up to 300 high school students and teachers will attend Future Georgia Educators Day on Thursday, Oct. 25, at Berry College.
This event, sponsored by Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) is an opportunity for students interested in teaching to learn more about the profession. High school students will take part in a full day of activities starting with registration at 8:30 a.m., and continuing with workshops, tours, speakers and the Knowledge Bowl competition. In addition, the students will be able to interact with Berry education majors and faculty.
“It’s a great partnership,” said Jacqueline McDowell, Dean of the Berry College Charter School of Education and Human Sciences. “We are building a network. It’s good for our education majors to be talking to high school students about why they chose teaching and why they are pursuing a college degree in that area. It’s also good for our college faculty to listen to what high schoolers are thinking about when they are trying to make the decision of if they want to be a teacher or not.”
Another important part of Future Georgia Educators day is the tour around campus, which includes the Child Development Center.
“I think getting them over to the Child Development Center and having them see what a real education program for threes, fours, fives can look like rather than what they perceive little ones can do, is incredibly valuable,” said McDowell.
Through all of these experiences, high school students will get a deeper look into the process to becoming a teacher while learning about subjects such as autism, STEM and the teacher licensing test.
