A Berry College senior is the Georgia winner of a $3,000 teaching scholarship.
Rachel Mayo, of Waverly Hall, Ga. is this year’s recipient of the William W. and Catherine M. Kelly Scholarship, administered by the Georgia Independent College Association. This is a competitive award given to one senior who is preparing to pursue a teaching career and also has a concentration of studies in the broad liberal arts. The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize the importance the humanities to future generations and emphasize the value it brings to teaching.
Mayo is currently a student teacher at Carterville High School for the chorus program and in piano classes. She will graduate from Berry this December with a bachelor’s degree in music education and hopes to find a job as a middle or high school chorus teacher.
“I've chosen music education as a career because it is a subject that allows students to not only learn independence as well as teamwork, but also discipline, creativity and empathy,” Mayo said. “All of my past teachers, professors and mentors that were in a musical leadership position have had the biggest impact on me and have given me the heart and the knowledge to share this passion with future students.”
Students were nominated by an eligible Georgia Independent College Association member.
“I feel honored to be chosen as the sole recipient of this scholarship in the state of Georgia, and I am thankful for all of the mentors who have supported me during the application process and the scholarship foundation for believing in my potential,” she said.
