ROME, Ga. – Berry College alum David Ramsey is the speaker for the inaugural Peter A. Lawler Lecture today, April 15.
Ramsey's lecture “Great Books and The Good Life” will be at 6 p.m. in the Evans Auditorium and is free and open to the public.
Ramsey, an associate professor of political science at the University of West Florida, teaches constitutional law and political philosophy like his former mentor, Lawler. His first book, “Antitrust and the Supreme Court,” examines the Supreme Court’s role in balancing the contentions of the political branches, business community, enforcement agencies and advocates of various schools of economic thought. He is currently working on preparing a digital edition of the papers of Roger B. Taney, fifth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1836 to 1864, who authored several consequential opinions that played an important role in developing American law. This will be the first scholarly edition of Taney’s papers to be published in print or digital format.
Ramsey received his bachelor’s degree in government and English from Berry College, his master’s degree in liberal arts from St. John’s College and his doctorate degree in political science from Baylor University.
Lawler, who died in 2017, was a beloved teacher and mentor for decades of Berry students and alumni. The nationally renowned political scholar was a prolific author and editor of more than 15 books. His work appeared in The National Review, the Weekly Standard and The New Atlantis. Lawler was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve on the President’s Council on Bioethics, was a recipient of the Richard M. Weaver Prize for Scholarly Excellence and named the George Washington Distinguished Professor of the American Founding, The Society of the Cincinnati.
