A Berry College professor is part of a team that has received the 2020 Excellence in Physics Education Award.
Professor and Department Chair for Physics, Astronomy and Geology Todd Timberlake is a part of the Open Source Physics Collaboration which has been awarded this recognition.
Open Source Physics is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and Davidson College and is a collection of free, open-source curriculum resources for teaching physics and astronomy with computers. The team consists of 18 members from institutions across the globe.
“I have contributed 57 different items to the collection, mostly astronomy simulations, some of which were co-authored with Dr. Mario Belloni of Davidson College,” Timberlake said.
The award is presented annually and consists of a $5,000 award, a certificate citing the achievements of the group or individual and an allowance for travel expenses to the American Physics Society meeting in April for the presentation of the award.
Timberlake said he is proud to be a part of an incredible team and feels honored to have recognition of his work.
“The Easy Java Simulations tool has been invaluable to me as a resource that has let me create interactive computer simulations that help my students learn astronomy and physics content,” he said.
