ROME, Ga. – An award-winning author and Berry College professor will read from a new book of poems at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 23) in the College Chapel at Berry.
English and creative writing professor Sandra Meek presents “Still,” a collection of poems which explores the harmful effects of colonialism on nature and culture. Through “Still,” Meek reimagines the art style of “studiolo,” a Renaissance concept which displays the juxtaposition of natural and manmade objects against negative space.
Meek serves as director of the Georgia Poetry Circuit and is a three-time recipient of the Georgia Author of the Year Award in Poetry. She was also awarded the Lucille Medwick Memorial Award from the Poetry Society of America in 2015 and the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry in 2001.
“Sandra Meek is a poet whose work becomes more and more insightful and, given the power we know poetry can have on Earth, more and more necessary,” award-winning poet Jericho Brown said. “Her latest poems turn from ecology to visual art in ways wholly unexpected.”
