“Embodiment III” art exhibition at Berry College
ROME, Ga. — Berry College’s Moon Gallery welcomes four artists in the “Embodiment III” invitational exhibit.
Featuring cyanotypes, comics, naturalistic drawings and ceramics, “Embodiment III” explores various mediums’ abilities to portray the human figure. It is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The show closes Oct. 19.
Graphic novelist Phillip Fleming will give a talk at 6 p.m. Oct. 2, in McAllister Auditorium and photographer Jillian Marie Browning will give a talk at 6 p.m. Oct. 16, in McAllister.
Fleming finds inspiration for his graphic novels in African and Caribbean cultures and utilizes themes like slavery, vampires, pandemics and war in his stories. His titles include “Black Ghost,” “Lost Jerusalem,” “Rooted,” and “Blood and Irons.”
Browning uses photographic processes, such as cyanotypes, to explore feminine identity through the lens of the contemporary black experience. Browning’s work has been featured in notable collections like the Center for Photography at Woodstock and the University of Maryland’s David C. Driskell Center.
The other artists in the exhibit are Jessica Burke and Jennifer D. Martin. Burke’s naturalistic drawings use the figure to speak to ideas of mortality and popular culture. An associate professor of art at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, she has been featured in more than 80 exhibits nationally and internationally.
Martin makes ceramic objects that reflect the tactile, imperfect and gestural qualities of the human body. She is the executive director of The Clay Studio in Philadelphia. To learn more about Berry’s art major, please visit https://www.berry.edu/academics/majors/art/.
