The Berry College Opera performed Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus on Jan. 19 through Jan. 22 at the Bell Recital Hall.
Die Fledermaus is a fictional story about the characters Gabriel Von Eisenstein and Dr. Falke’s friendship filled with practical jokes and laughter. The story is set New Year’s Eve of 1899 in Vienna where the audience is anticipated seeing if the friends will continue their pranks on each other.
“Die Fledermaus often has the reputation of being one of the silliest pieces in opera history,” says producer Dr. Scott Willis, the producer, and a professor at Berry. “Even so, it still contains some of the most beautiful and engaging music that Johann Strauss II, also known as “The King of Waltz,” composed.
In rehearsing and directing this production of Die Fledermaus, the cast and I had an absolute blast and gave ourselves over completely to Strauss’s and Haffner/Genée's (librettists) sense of humor.”
