Berry College kicked off the new academic year Monday, welcoming approximately 665 new students to campus.
Interesting facts about 2006, the birth year of the class of 2028:
- George W. Bush was president.
- NASA launched its New Horizons spacecraft (a 9-year mission to study Pluto.)
- The DOW index broke 12,000 for the first time.
- Top Movies: “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” “The Da Vinci Code” and “Cars”
- “Bad Day” (by Daniel Powter) was the top-played song.
- Barry Bonds hit his 715th career home run, passing Babe Ruth on the MLB all-time list.
- The average cost for a dozen eggs was .98 cents and a loaf of bread was .97 cents.
- The iPhone was introduced in their first year of life.
- They have always known Facebook, Twitter (now X), Instagram and YouTube.
- They were in 8th grade when the Covid pandemic closed schools in March of 2020.
- 2006 was also the year President Steve Briggs arrived at Berry.
The new class, comprised of 619 first-year students plus transfer students, arrived last week for orientation – Viking Venture. Throughout the week they attended community-building events, learned about the LifeWorks program, created a human “B” and participated in service days at local charitable organizations and non-profits.
This semester also brings a variety of construction projects on campus. Work continues on the new health sciences building, Morgan Bailey Hall, which will house the new Physician Associate program. Meanwhile, over the summer, Berry completely renovated its suite-style dormitory Thomas Berry Hall.
