Berry College recently partnered with the Chieftain’s Museum to present a lecture from an expert on Native American history.
Michael Morris spoke on the politics of the Indian Removal Act of 1830 in Georgia and the legacy of removal in Lumpkin and Gilmer County.
Morris is a board member for the Georgia Trail of Tears Association. He previously served as the president of the South Carolina Historical Association and was on the executive board for the Georgia Association of Historians. He has authored two books including “Cherokee Odyssey: The Journey from Sovereign to ‘Civilized’” and “The Bringing of Wonder: Trade and the Indians of the Southeast.”
Morris earned a bachelor's degree in history and Spanish from Augusta University, a master’s degree in American history from Georgia Southern University and a doctorate in early American and Native American studies from Auburn University. He is a professor of history at the College of Coastal Georgia.
