Recent graduate Kevin Grier was never one to sit still.
As a business management major, he gained real-world experience through a variety of positions at Berry. He worked for Viking Furniture, Enrollment Management, Residence Life, the Cage Center, and Facilities Services.
Kevin was also a Gate of Opportunity scholar. The Gate of Opportunity scholarship is a competitive scholarship for financially-eligible students who work hard—in the classroom and out. Over four years, Gate Scholars work 4,500 total hours.
In his free time, he served as treasurer for Berry’s Black Student Association and played on the Berry football team. He was a 4-time First Team All-Conference recipient and won the SAA Newcomer of the Year award his freshman year.
The mentorships and friendships Kevin made through his involvement on campus helped him to appreciate the value of service and placing other’s needs above his own.
He calls Berry trustee Cecil “Buster” Wright III (73C) a mentor and friend. “Buster Wright … reminds me that it’s all about the people,” Kevin says. “It’s better to understand and think more of another person than yourself.”
It was this commitment to service that led to Kevin being awarded the Algernon Sydney Sullivan award. This award recognizes students whose noble character and commitment to service set them apart as examples for others.
Now he has set an example abroad. After graduating in May, Kevin took part in a cross-cultural project to Belo Horizonte, Brazil for six weeks through Campus Outreach Ministries. The goal of the trip was to reach out to local students about the gospel through one-on-one evangelism.
Kevin isn’t done just yet. As well as pursuing a Master of Divinity degree, he says “I will continue to work for Campus Outreach Ministries this fall … by intentionally reaching out to students about the gospel and equipping them as laborers for the lost world.”
