Senior art majors will have their work on display beginning April 25 at the Berry College Moon Gallery.
“Elements of Life,” an exhibition of clay sculptures by Marley Bostick, opens at the Berry College Moon Gallery April 25 through April 29. There will be a reception at 5 p.m. April 25 in the Moon Gallery.
Bostick takes her inspiration in large part from popular animated shows such as ""Avatar: The Last Air Bender"" and Disney movies including ""Hercules."" The stoneware sculptures have been colored using a combination of glaze and under-glazes to bring the elements to life. The arrangement of the pieces in the gallery represent the connections some elements have to each other and how multiple elements can combine to create something new. Several pieces show the duality of any given element, such as the vulnerability of melting ice paired with icy spikes that show how ice can have an element of darkness too. The sculptures seen in ""Elements of Life"" are a representation of what Bostick sees as vital elements that make up her world.
Senior Shelley Graves will exhibit her senior thesis “In Threes,” May 2-7 in the Moon Gallery. A closing reception is at noon May 7.
The show features 11 series of India ink figure drawings centering around three young women. Graves’ figures exist in an isolated space, creating a sense of introspection and exploring a theme of openness. Each piece takes its title from a line of poetry written by the artist, and the titles of each work in a series combine to form individual short poems.
Like the works themselves, her poems explore similar concepts of openness, change, and introspection. Each poem is written in the third person with only pronouns to identify the characters. Through similar subject matter and mood, Graves hints at a shared story between the poem and their corresponding drawings while leaving room for interpretation.
Graves, of Euharlee, Georgia, will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in studio art in May. At Berry she has been awarded with Best in Show at the 2016 Annual Student Honors Show. Graves’ work has also been shown in the Berry Student and Faculty Exhibition at the Harris Art Center in Calhoun, Georgia.
